UCSB Lagoon Prescribed Burn
SANTA BARBARA, Ca. September 13, 2016 – On Wednesday, September 14th, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBCFD), in conjunction with the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), will conduct a small prescribed burn in UCSB's coastal open space. Controlled burns have been taking place for the past decade on the small piece of land called Lagoon Island. This burn is part of an ongoing UCSB research project. The burn will take place at 12:00 p.m. and is estimated to take an hour to complete.

PSA Red Flag Warning Text Alert
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur soon. The Santa Barbara County Fire Department reminds residents that a Red Flag Warning is a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures that can create extreme fire behavior. Red Flag Warnings are issued by the National Weather Service usually 24 hours in advance of a Red Flag Event.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department reminds the public that all fireworks, including the so-called ‘safe and sane’ variety, are illegal in all unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County, including the cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, Buellton and Solvang. Safe and sane fireworks are allowed within the city limits of Santa Maria, Guadalupe and Lompoc. Fireworks that are purchased in any of these cities must be used within those city limits.

June 23, 2016 – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the mountains of Santa Barbara County (zone CAZ252) effective from 6 pm Thursday night to 6 am Saturday. In addition, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for the Santa Barbara South Coast during this same time period due to the potential for critical fire weather conditions.
