Holiday Fire Investigation Report News Release

On Friday, July 6, 2018, at approximately 8:40 PM. the Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBCFD) responded to a wildland fire at the north end of North Fairview Avenue, in an unincorporated area located north of the City of Goleta, California. The subject fire, identified as the ‘Holiday Incident" (referred to in this report as Holiday Fire), burned approximately 113 acres, damaged 3 single-family dwellings, and destroyed 24 structures, including 10 single-family dwellings.

SANTA BARBARA, Ca. February 28, 2018 – The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts that a storm arriving Thursday night and continuing through Friday could have rainfall in the range of 1/3 to 2/3 of an inch per hour. The NWS informed the County that moderate to heavy rainfall rates early Friday may be enough to generate isolated mud and debris flows near burn areas. The communities near and below the Thomas, Sherpa and Whittier burn areas are strongly recommended to relocate to safer locations for their own safety. High risk for loss of life and property exists.

Sherpa Fire Cause

Sherpa Fire Cause
SANTA BARBARA, Ca. May 2, 2017 – Fire investigators from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBCFD) have released the official cause of the Sherpa Fire as accidental. A resident living on La Scherpa Ranch was burning a log in his indoor fireplace when the wind picked up, causing smoke to fill the residence. The resident then carried the burning log to an outside water faucet, dropping hot embers on the ground, which ignited the vegetation fire. The Sherpa Fire started on June 15, 2016 and burned 7,474 acres before it was fully contained on July 12, 2016.
