History
In 1949 the old Santa Maria Army Airfield was declared surplus property by the War Assets Administration and deeded to the County of Santa Barbara. Old Fire Station 4 had been moved from Waller Park and then relocated (¼ mile north on the east side of Skyway Drive) into the World War II Military buildings. The County officially transferred it’s interest in the Santa Maria Public Airport to the Airport District in July of 1963. In 1967 an agreement was drawn up by Airport Manager Art Johnson, between the Airport District and the County where the County would erect and staff a fire station for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Protection for the Airport if it was granted the land for the Fire Station. Designed by D. Stewart Kerr, Hubble Construction Company began the building process for Station 21 in January of 1969 and the building was completed and moved into June 1, 1970. In May of 2008 the station was relocated from 3339 Terminal Drive at the Airport to it's current location of 355 Union Ave. (the former Orcutt Fire Station).
