History
On January 3rd 1949 in response to a need for local fire protection the
Mission Canyon Fire protection District was formed. During the 50’s
it was not uncommon to have a single patrolman with a vehicle to respond
with and a two-way radio.
In June of 1962 Santa Barbara County took over the responsibility of the
Mission Canyon Fire Protection District.
In 1966 the Department was renting a property at 2605 Dorking Place where
a Firefighter and his family lived. Less than one year later the property
was sold and the inspector was relocated to Station 13 until the new station
was built.
On January 19th 1970 a contract was awarded and the building was completed
and occupied less than 6 months later on June 15th 1970 at its current location
in Mission Canyon near the northern tip of Rocky Nook Park, which the County
had purchased back in 1955. Over the years office and living space became
tight and with the addition of women on the fire fighting force the dormitory
became inadequate and so the Department began the process of building new
dormitory facilities behind the existing station in April of 1999.
