Assembling a Disaster Kit

Do you know what to do? Do you have a plan?
Fire, police and emergency medical services may be delayed in responding. You need to learn what to do, have a plan, and be prepared to take care of yourself, your family and your community.

Keep a Disaster Kit for your family at the ready at all times. Use easy to carry containers, like the heavy duty, plastic storage container shown in this photo. Review this handy Disaster Supplies Checklist and include any other items you think you may need to sustain you during a disaster.

If you have a family you need to Prepare Your Family for a Disaster. Children need to be ready for a disaster even more than their parents do in some respects so don't forget to Prepare Your Children and their Enviroment at Home. Check with your children's school or day care providers, be aware of their emergency plans for your school age children and make sure they have current contact informaion. Get your children involved. Have them add a toy or game to the disaster kit.

The Elderly and Physcially Challenged are especially vulnerable during a disaster. They may have special needs that need to be addressed.

If you ever are having a difficult time thinking of a gift for someone, put together a disaster kit together for them. It will really show that you care!

If you evacuate your home leave a message at your home telling family members and others where you can be found.
